What Is An Order Picker?

An order picker (often known as a cherry picker) is an electric forklift with a basket on the forks, enabling workers to lift and lower themselves to pick items from vertical racking. This piece of warehouse equipment allows operators to quickly collect items for order fulfillment.

Order pickers are generally used in warehouses that have a large diversity of goods that require piece of case picking, in contrast to operations that typically manage complete pallets. These lift trucks are ideal for facilities that demand high level order picking, and an average machine can lift up to 3,000 pounds nearly 32 feet.

Order Picker vs Forklift

There are significant differences between a forklift and an order picker lift. This type of lift truck isn’t suitable for moving and stacking pallets on an everyday basis. For general forklift tasks, an order picker simply isn’t the right tool.

These machines are a specialized type of lift truck, engineered to lift the operator as well as products. Specifically, an order picker truck is defined in the OSHA Class II Powered Industrial Truck description as an “Electric Motor Narrow Aisle Truck, Lift Code 2.”

Order Picker Safety

OSHA regulations require order picker platform operators to wear a safety harness while working, because they are far above the ground and slips can cause great bodily harm or death. Order picker trucks must be outfitted with an overhead harness anchor point capable of supporting 5,000 pounds. Furthermore, any harnesses and connectors must be OSHA compliant.

Narrow Aisle Applications

Frequently, order picker forklifts are used in VNA or narrow aisle configurations where there is very little clearance between racks on one or two sides of the operator. Given that workers can move the trucks forward and backward while they are in the air, one minor miscalculation in a narrow aisle can mean bodily harm and damage to storage racks and products. Because of this, order picker machines are sometimes set up with wire guidance systems to keep them on an electronically controlled path.
