What Is An Order Picker?

An order picker (sometimes referred to as a cherry picker) is an electric forklift with a deck on the forks, allowing operators to raise and lower themselves to pick products from upright racking. This piece of warehouse equipment allows operators to rapidly gather items to fulfill orders.

Order pickers are often put to use in operations that have a large assortment of goods that require case or piece picking, as opposed to warehouse that typically manage entire pallets. These forklifts are ideal for operations that require high level order picking, and an average truck can lift up to 3,000 pounds nearly 32 feet.

Order Picker vs Forklift

So, what’s the difference between an order picker lift and a forklift? This type of lift truck is not suitable for transporting and stacking pallets on an everyday basis. It’s not the right tool for a general forklift task.

These machines are a specialized type of lift truck, intended to lift the operator together with products. Specifically, an order picker truck is what the OSHA Class II Powered Industrial Truck category calls an “Electric Motor Narrow Aisle Truck, Lift Code 2.”

Order Picker Safety

OSHA requires order picker platform operators to wear a safety harness at all times, since they are high up in the air and mistakes can can be catastrophic. Order picker trucks are required to have an overhead harness anchor point capable of supporting 5,000 pounds. Additionally, all fall protection gear including the harness and connectors must be OSHA approved.

Narrow Aisle Applications

Frequently, order picker forklifts are used in VNA or narrow aisle applications where there are only a few inches of clearance between racks on either side of the truck. Given that operators are able to drive the lift trucks up and down the aisle while they are in an elevated position, one small mistake in a narrow aisle can mean worker injury and damage to storage racks and products. For this reason, order picker machines are frequently set up with wire guidance systems to keep them on an electronically controlled course.
